CASS- CAE Aircrew Selection System

CASS is one of the most popular pilot selection system and introduced in India by Indigo Airlines for selection of there crew. To assess the pilot with different experience levels this CAE Aircrew Selection System (CASS )has various difficulty levels but basics remain same.

Where is CASS used?

  1. IndiGo Cadet Pilot Selection
  2. IndiGo JFO Selection
  3. Instructor Pilot Selection
  4. Senior Pilots like Captain, TREs, TRIs selection

Selection system stages are broadly divided as following:

  1. Questionnaire Stage
  2. Interview Stage
  3. Physical Task Stage
  4. Debrief Stage

CASS Questionnaire Stage

This consists of a personality evaluation, the questionnaire has questions and no time limit, but one should try to finish within 30-45 minutes in one attempt. The questions will change in length and have options to choose from. There are no right or wrong answers. This is to assess ones personality to the highest standard so one should be totally honest when answering the questionnaire.

One should not spend too much time thinking about each question – first reaction is usually the best. The information given may not be as detailed as wanted, but answer the best available option. Be honest and truthful. Do not answer just because it seems like the right thing to say.

CASS Interview Stage

This involves a panel interview with 2 members of staff and takes 30-40 minutes. Like the questionnaire, this interview looks at one’s personality traits, states, emotion control and quality of life. This is done through a relaxed chat, more like an informal interview.

CASS Physical Task Stage

This is a psycho-motor test involving basic flying skills that also test one’s abilities to multitask and process information in a stressful environment. This uses a flight simulator that is based on a simple computer game. It is controlled using a stick and throttle.

One will be made to sit in-front of 5 screens. The middle three screens will show the cockpit view, with the head-up display in the centre. The left screen is the question screen where different types of questions will appear for one to answer. The right screen is the map screen, which shows your route and current information.Ā One will be taught how to use the system and will get some example questions to practice before the test.

Questions on the side screen are based as following:

Numerical Reasoning: Questions that use numbers & mathematical data.
Verbal Reasoning: Questions based on spoken or written information.
Abstract Reasoning: Recognising patterns/similarities between shapes & figures.
Perceptual Speed and Accuracy: Working quickly & accurately to find information from words, numbers or pictures.
Spatial Relationship Reasoning: Being able to see spatial patterns and move/rotate these in your mind, to solve visual problems.
Working Memory: How well you can remember information in the short term.
Stroop Test: How and what you pay attention to.

Ā

The whole physical task lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and has 5 stages, viz.:

Cognitive – Practice at answering the psychometric questions.

Familiarisation 1 – Practice using the flight simulator and the joy stick and throttle.

Familiarisation 2 – Practice using the flight simulator with the map (Sat Nav) screen.

Mission 1 – The first mission – flying the simulator and answering questions.

Mission 2 – The second mission – similar to mission 1 with some extra tasks.

Important note 1:Remember that for all of the questions, one will only be able to give answers once the question has finished being asked. One will not be able to select an answer by touching the screen or typing an answer into the number-pad while the question is playing.

Important note 2: During the Physical task one will be video recorded. This is so that in the debrief session one can see how one reacted.

Once all these stages are done there will be a final stage:

CASS Debrief Stage:

During this stage, one will sit with the examiner and watch the video playback of oneself during parts of the physical task. This is so one knows how one have done and tell the examiner about it.

  1. I hope you can clarify my queries regarding CASS

    1) What preparation do you think is adequate before appearing for CASS?
    2) Could you pls suggest any software that can help us in preparation for CASS?
    3) What is your opinion on CASS preparation classes offered by certain people? Will they prove to be helpful?

    Thank you.

    1. Kindly share your email id so that we can mail you some preparatory material. No classes are required because if you are trained Indigo will get to know and may have negative effect on your selection. Be real and you will do well.
