New technologies can cut aviation emissions! Truth or a Myth

Study According to a recent study new technologies have been hyped as the key to sustainable air travel by the aviation industry. This is perpetuating a new culture of non-accountability for the increased emissions as well as the subsequent environmental damage. A group of international researchers have recently explored how these new technologies like solar flight, alternative fuels and innovative fuel-efficient aircraft designs are presented in front of the world by the industry and the media. But the level of success in applying these technologies can hardly be noticed. This team of researchers has found that the discussions related to such technologies create a myth of zero-emission flights and furthermore it shields the aviation industry from a close scrutiny of its sustainability policies.

Mr. Scott Cohen from the University of Surrey has said that “Air travel has experienced substantial growth over the last 40 years. By 2050 energy use in aviation will have tripled, accounting for 19 percent of all transport energy use in 2050, compared to 11 percent in 2006”. He also added that “This is in sharp contrast to pledges by industry to reduce flight emissions through technology, aiming for ‘zero emission flight’ through overly hyped developments such as solar planes and hydrogen fuels”. “The way in which new technologies are presented constitutes a ‘myth’, a form of propaganda which denies the truth that progress in climate policy for aviation has stalled”. This study recently got published in the journal Transportation Research Part D. It analyzed how new aviation technologies such as solar flight have been projected by the industry as the key to sustainable aviation. But the researchers have explored how this possible solution of solar flights is highly unfeasible, with the creators of the first solar plane to fly around the clock admitting that solar planes would never replace the fuel-powered commercial flights.
